As the school year comes to an end, we must remain vigilant about the safety of our children and schools. In light of the recent events at Santa Fe High School, where 10 people lost their lives, 10 people were injured, and hundreds will live with devastating psychological scars, it will take a community wide effort to ensure the school year ends safely and successfully. Schools have been put on high alert, causing our students to divert their attention from their education to active shooting drills. While I understand the importance of these drills, as a parent, I find it outrageous that our children and educators have to take time away from school work to ensure they are prepared for the unthinkable.

During this time of unprecedented school violence, it is imperative that leadership takes initiatives and makes bold moves. I have contacted local school boards to offer my support, as well as inquire about safety plans moving forward. With the school board’s permission, I am committed to making myself and community leaders present on school campuses to do my part to ensure the safety of our children and faculty members.

I believe that part of this problem is caused by the easy accessibility of firearms, and will work diligently towards legislation that keeps weapons out of the hands of people who intend to use them to inflict violence on and provoke fear from innocent people.

If you would like to know how we can make a difference, contact my office. Let’s work together to ensure our children have safe environments where they can learn and thrive.

Best Regards,
